Heart of a Coach: Sue Ramsey, Ashland University

Immediately following her team’s overtime loss in the 2012 NCAA Division II national championship, Sue Ramsey prayed that God would use the disappointment for His glory. Tears of agony turned to shouts of joy one year later when her inspired Ashland Eagles won the school’s first-ever women’s basketball national title. Now in her 19th season with the program, Ramsey is focused on continuing their winning ways while teaching her team about an eternal purpose beyond the hardwood.

Heart of a Coach: Tim Bogar

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; think about Him in all your ways, and He will guide you on the right paths.” – Proverbs 3:5-6

A major league third-base coaching box is no place for the indecisive. For Tim Bogar—the man who holds the position for the Boston Red Sox—every split-second decision he makes carries tremendous weight not only for the team, but also for the die-hard fans at Fenway Park. But as a former player himself, Bogar isn’t intimidated by the situation. Instead, he draws on his faith in Christ and finds the strength to bravely face each day, each game and each play.

    Heart of a Coach:Kristin Drabyn

Kristin Drabyn is no stranger to the Division-I college basketball scene. But now, the former UMBC guard is leading from the sideline rather than the floor as a first-year assistant coach at Holy Cross. In her new role, Drabyn is learning to make friends with the bench—something that can be difficult for a former player. Despite the change of scenery, though, Coach Drabyn is remaining constant in the most important thing: her personal witness for Jesus Christ.

  • Heart of a Competitor

    October 29, 2009

    devotional
    Set:
Ready. . .Set. . .Go! They were off. Sixty runners were headed for the first hill.

Junior high cross country is an adventure. In this particular race, the 1.5-mile course ran through woods and hills, around playgrounds, and all over a park. Jay, a seventh-grade boy, was leading the field about halfway through the race. As they headed into the woods, Jay and the runner behind him approached a turn. Jay went on one side of the cone, and his competitor the other. The race continued, but Jay turned around.

Heart of an Athlete: Adaora Elonu

Texas A&M forward Adaora Elonu may have been born and raised in Houston, but her childhood was also influenced by more than just the Texas culture—specifically, her family’s Nigerian roots and her parents’ desire to raise their five children as Christ-followers. Now a senior with the defending NCAA National Champion Aggies, Elonu is working to establish a legacy of her own—one of both basketball brilliance and spiritual impact.

Heart of an Athlete: Ahna Lewis

Growing up in Morgantown, W.Va., Ahna Lewis looked up to the athletes at West Virginia University and dreamed of being a Mountaineer herself one day. Now that her dream is a reality, this redshirt-senior cross-country runner remembers the impact those former athletes had on her, and she embraces her opportunity to influence others. But, for Lewis, it’s about more than just making a positive difference; it’s about making an impact for Christ.

Heart of an Athlete: Ali Hall

Last year, as a freshman on the University of Tennessee soccer team, Ali Hall accepted an invitation to an FCA Huddle meeting for reasons that had little to do with spiritual desire (a.k.a. free food). She had no idea how that decision would change her life. Mere months later, she fully surrendered her life to Christ and began living and playing for Him. This season, the sophomore defender is focusing on using her athletic gifts to bring glory to the Lord as she and the Lady Vols take on the SEC.

Heart of an Athlete: Annie Lockwood

“…I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” – Galatians 2:20

Annie Lockwood had high expectations for her athletic career when she walked on to the softball team at Arizona State University in 2009. Knowing the Sun Devils were fresh off a national championship and hoping to continue in their success, Lockwood immediately knew she wanted to be a part of it. Now three seasons later, she has realized that dream and stands amazed at what the Lord has done in her life—and how she loves to play for His glory.
