  • Isaiah 48:17

    September 10, 2010

    devotional
    Set:

Hockey Chat: Martin Brodeur was a one great forward of his young age, skating hard and scoring goals.  Those of you that know Marty as the goaltender from the New Jersey Devils think I’ve got the wrong guy, but not at all.  He started skating when he was 3 years old and played to put pucks in the net.  He was a forward for the early years of his hockey days.  That all changed one day when he was 6 and the goal tender for his team didn’t show up for a game.  Coach asked told him to get in net and he’s been stopping goals ever since.

  • It Happens

    November 01, 2008

    devotional
    Set:

It happens all the time: As an athlete or coach, you are confronted with a situation in which your attitude will dictate your altitude. Someone does you wrong; a promise is broken; a ref makes a horrible call in a game; you are treated poorly. Whatever the circumstances, does your attitude show that God is in your life?

In his letter to the Philippians, Paul urged the believers to stand firm in their faith in Christ. Paul wanted everyone to stay focused on Christ and the glory of the cross, no matter what happened. In every situation we are under the authority of God, and we should act and react accordingly. Though we may be wronged, mistreated or severely tortured, we must stand firm, knowing that God will provide the victory.

  • It Is Well with My Soul

    June 07, 2010

    devotional
    Set:

In 1996, Bob Carlisle penned a tune entitled “Butterfly Kisses” which became a popular wedding song. It brought tears to even the toughest of men. But many don’t know that he also wrote a song entitled, “It is well with my soul.” Check out these words:

“Oh, my life is filled with white-hot anxiety, though I think I wear it very well. I still worry ‘bout what people might think of me if they every saw me past my outer shell. Believe me, I know how to worry. I’ve chewed my fingernails down to the bone. Oh, I’ve got my share of problems. Still it is well with my soul. Sometime I wrestle with my conscience. Still it is well with my soul.”

  • It Starts Early

    April 04, 2005

    devotional
    Set:

I am back into coaching again. I'm coaching a finely tuned machine – amazing athletes with the ability to lose focus in three seconds or less. Yes, I'm coaching little league (9-10 year-olds). We have been practicing for several weeks, and it has already started. These little players are starting to say bad things to teammates, are picking on each other, and are hurting each others' feelings before the season even starts. Where does this all come from? Why does it start so early? I only had to look in the mirror for an answer.

  • It's About Love

    April 11, 2006

    devotional
    Set:
Rulon Gardner and Dremiel Byers were both vying for one spot on the 2004 U.S. Olympic wrestling team. Gardner was the 2000 Olympic gold medalist and 2001 World Champion and Byers the 2002 World Champion. Gardner won a pair of 2-1 overtime matches at the Olympic trials, and Byers laid down his pride and went to Athens to help prepare his friend for another gold medal run by serving as his training partner. Gardner came home with the bronze medal and a gold medal friend. Would he have done the same for Byers? No doubt about it!

  • It's All About Heart

    December 04, 2006

    devotional
    Set:
It takes heart to play sports. Coaches fire up their teams by saying, "Go out there and play with all your heart. Leave it all on the field!" Skills and talents are important, but playing with heart separates the great athletes from the good ones. When my daughter looks at me while she is playing her basketball games, I pound my hand on my heart. It is my "secret" sign to encourage her to play with heart. Playing with heart is all about drive, passion and desire.

The Bible talks about the heart all the time -- more than 540 times! The Lord even told Samuel that He looks at the heart, not the external stuff. God looks at the internal -- the heart.

  • It's All About Heart!

    April 11, 2008

    devotional
    Set:

In the first three rounds of this year’s NCAA Tournament, Davidson’s Stephen Curry absolutely torched teams, averaging 34.3 points per game and leading his team to their first Regional Championship since 1969. Though Kansas defeated Curry and the tenacious Davidson team in the Elite Eight, the Wildcats will still go down as the Cinderella team of 2008.

It was only two years ago that Curry was overlooked by several other schools whose seasons ended long before Davidson’s. Curry was a scrawny, 6-1, 155-pound senior, considered too small and frail to handle the physical play of the AAC and SEC. Many major Division I coaches could not get past his physique. But one coach, Bob McKillop, looked beneath the physical appearance and saw the heart of a champion.

  • It's All in His Hands

    July 26, 2010

    devotional
    Set:

Death is always a difficult topic to grasp. Whenever someone dies we always wonder, where was God when they died, and why did He let it happen to them? From movie stars, professional athletes, and other celebrities to firefighters, police officers, and loved ones; our hearts are filled with grief and for a while everything pales in comparison to our loss.
