Change Your Sacrifice - Inside Out: Part I
Becoming a successful competitor requires intense dedication and sacrifice. We sacrifice our hobbies, our social life, our time, and sometimes even our bodies in order to reach our goals. As legendary NBA Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar once said, “I think that the good and the great are only separated by the willingness to sacrifice.”
1 Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God. –Romans 12:1-2

Turn To Me
My junior year of college, a young man I knew for only a week came into my room and after 40 minutes broke down in tears. Men don’t cry, especially young, proud, college men like Shawn.
Later, after we talked through the issues of life and God, I realized there were more “Shawns” out there. Young men, old men — men of all ages — all bound together by similar challenges and struggles. And no matter where they are in life, the remedy is the same: today’s men are desperately in need of their heavenly Father. -
Change Your Aim - Inside Out: Part II
If the world’s elite athletes can be pegged with one common trait, it would likely be that each of them is driven by a heightened sense of purpose. It is purpose that establishes a secure target at which they can aim and focus all of their energy: The golfer takes aim at the hole. The sprinter takes aim at the finish line. The free throw shooter takes aim at the basket. The archer takes aim at the bulls-eye. The pitcher takes aim at the strike zone. These competitors must employ a steady hand that comes from confidence in their abilities and a keen understanding of their identity. Any variation of that confidence— leading to arrogance on one extreme or insecurity on the other extreme—can quickly blur their vision and greatly hinder their aim.

Every sport has them—those pesky but necessary “do’s and don’ts” otherwise known as rules of the game and rules of the team. No matter how much you sacrifice and how focused you are in aiming at the goal, your competitive dreams are put at risk the moment you do something that contradicts the rules. There are no shortcuts to success as an athlete or in life. Sooner or later, it will catch up with you.

From the little leagues to the professional ranks, success in sports is almost exclusively defined by wins and losses. Perhaps legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi summed it up best when he said, “Winning isn’t everything. It’s the only thing.” In some respects, you could make a strong case for that belief. Winning often opens the doors to life-changing opportunity. On the other hand, the all-or-nothing attitude that is prevalent in today’s sports community has the potential to bring undeserved disappointment to those on the outside looking in.

Goal
To help students understand God’s view of drugs, alcohol and tobacco; to help students realize that the use of alcohol, drugs and tobacco has negative consequences; and to motivate students to live a life that honors God.

Warm Up
Break up into small groups. Assign each group a scripture from the list of Bible references on the dangers of drinking. (See end of lesson for list of Scripture references.) Have each group determine a lesson to learn from its Scripture and how it relates to their lives. Ask two or three groups to share with everyone.

Warmup
Fill out the following “Press Guide” with the top five things that are true about you (height, weight, position, favorite sport, favorite food, year in school, hobbies, number in family, etc.)
Share these things with a partner and discuss how you know the statements are true.

Warmup
Your athletic career is over; you are at your Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The emcee for the evening is going to introduce you and all of your life’s achievements. Provide for them what you would want them to say in your introduction – both things that you have accomplished and things you would like to accomplish. Don’t limit to just athletic achievements. What would you want them to say about your character? Your lifestyle?
With a partner share the key accomplishments that the emcee will highlight.

- Josh was amazed by how many people come up and encourage him about what he has gone through. Why do you think this is surprising to him?
- For as many positive comments he also received as many negative ones, too. Why would people bash Hamilton for how God has transformed his life?
- Josh only gives credit to God for his life-changing transformation. Is there an area in your life that needs to be transformed? If so, what area?
- Read Romans 12:1-2. What does it mean to present your body as a living sacrifice?
- How can you not be conformed to this world today?

- As a young athlete Brian said his career and life were out of control. How easy is it to get out of control in your life? What leads you to living that way?
- Living the dream as a professional athlete, he made baseball his god. What is god in your life right now? How did it get that way?
- How do we get so wrapped up in living for ourselves and not for God?
- Read Isaiah 44:6. How do you need to put this verse into practice in your life?
- Brian confessed to making poor decisions. When you find yourself in that place, how do you get yourself out of it? Where does God fit into that equation?
- What areas of your life are you putting before you relationship with God?

- Coach Coale talks about being a part of her program as more than just being a player in it. What was she referring to with that point?
- How can sport teach you more about life and the skills necessary to make it in the world today?

- In his prayers he wants to glorify God through whatever happens. Do you pray during competition? If so, are you praying for you to be glorified by doing something great, or are you praying for God to receive the glory in what happens? There is a HUGE difference…what is the difference to you?
- How has God called you to pray as an athlete?
