Ready:

"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me." -Revelation 3:20

Set:

Many athletes get distracted easily. The crowd, the faces and the noise all are factors that distract the athlete today. Even small gyms with just a few people in the stands can produce a loud noise. This can present a problem for a team, especially the coach. The coach needs the attention of his team at all times to work the game plan. One mark of a great player is his or her ability to hear the voice of the coach. Staying tuned in to the bench during a contest is essential for success. Players who have the ability to eliminate distractions and hear their coaches' voice will more than likely come out on top in the end.

While the mark of a player is the ability to hear their coach's voice, it also is the mark of a believer. The mark of a believer is the ability to hear the voice of the Master Coach. What voice do you hear calling at your door? The world is slamming at your door; Jesus is knocking gently.  Friends and family shout for your attention; Jesus quietly and patiently asks for it. Society offers flashy opportunities; Jesus just wants a meal with you. In the book of Revelation we read, "Here I am. I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me."

Knock, knock … Who is at your door? One thing you can count on: Jesus is always speaking, always present and always available for you to open the door, to hear His voice and invite Him in.  Few take Him up on His offer. Fewer still invite Him in. But don't let them tell you that He is not there. He promises to never leave us, nor forsake us. He always will be with us. His voice can be heard over the loudest crowd ever, if we will simply listen.

So, knock, knock … Who's there? Let me give you a hint. Listen to His voice, open the door and invite Him in. This house Guest will never wear out His welcome.

Go:

1. As an athlete, are you easily distracted during a game?
2. What voices do you hear today?
3. Have you opened the door and invited Him in?

Extra Reading: Luke 9:34-35, John 5:24-25

Overtime:

God, just as sheep know their shepherd’s voice, I want to know Your voice. Adjust my hearing so that I can hear You over all the distractions the world throws my way. Today I open the door to You and invite You to come into my life in a new way. Thank You for never leaving me or forsaking me. Amen.
