"A scribe approached Him and said, 'Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go!' Jesus told him, 'Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.' 'Lord,' another of His disciples said, 'first let me go bury my father.' But Jesus told him, 'Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.' –Matthew 8:19-22
In Matthew 8:19-22, it would seem that Jesus was heartless and uncaring with the disciple. The reality was that Jesus had need of him at that moment, but the young man’s current condition or situation kept him from committing to God. What present situations or conditions keep us from God? What will we miss by not following Him today? What have we already missed by not choosing Him before?
The sweet reality is that God knows us and is well acquainted with our circumstances and conditions. If we always waited for the most appropriate time to come to God, we may never come at all.
What will we miss if we wait to obey God? Some invitations and opportunities from God may come with a limited opportunity to respond and, if not accepted immediately, will be lost. Or, important occasions to impact others may pass by us. Simply put, missing opportunities to respond to the Lord can be life altering.
1. What are some of the benefits of choosing God now? (Examples: the confident assurance of knowing that God is for you; the blessing of having the full arsenal of heaven at your call; peace in your life; the ultimate benefit of spending eternity with the Father in heaven)
2. Will you choose God now? Now, is a good time.
Joshua 24:15; John 10:1-5
Father, give me the desire to know You now and love You now. Help me respond to Your invitation without hesitation. I want to receive Your benefits and know that I am Yours. Today I choose You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
