Chapel – Heart for Teammates
1 – To have the Heart of a Champion one must have:
• A heart for competition
• A heart for training
• A heart for teammates
2 – Today we will talk about having a heart for teammates.
3 – John 15:12-13 (read the text)
• Jesus’ command was for these men to love each other. They did it.
• Jesus defined the greatest kind of love – to give one’s life for his friends.
o He did that literally. He died for them and for us.
Chapel – Comparisons
1 – Do you watch web sites for the weekly team power rankings?
• Do you pay attention to the state or national rankings of teams in our sport?
• Do you read the paper to see who beat whom?
• Do you make comparisons between teams and players?
• Sometimes, such comparisons could be misleading and lead you to a poor performance and with it a disappointing loss.
Chapel – Breakthrough
1 – Games with this opponent have been ones where our team has made breakthroughs over the last few years. What will it be today?
• Breakthrough victory story 1 – Commitment to teammates
• Breakthrough victory story 2 – Commitment to winning
• Breakthrough victory story 3 – Commitment to being champions
• What will it be this year? Our breakthrough will be determined by our commitments.
1 – Your coaching staff and your senior leaders have a vision for your team. To be champions is a vision worth believing in and pursuing.
2 – Habakkuk 2:2-3 (read the text)
1 – Introduction – If we will compete in a unified way today, we will do very well.
2 – Take encouragement from this story in Genesis chapter 11. Read the text – Genesis 11:1-8.
1 – Competitions like this one require tremendous team unity. Each one must bring his/her best to make the team all it can be.
2 – Think for a moment about how diverse your team is:
3 – Think about how the team is diminished if any one of you is at less than 100%.
4 – Think about how the team’s personality on the floor changes with each substitution. You are not interchangeable parts in a machine.
5 – Think about the factors which unify such a diverse set of people. These are most important.
1 – This is the sort of situation a competitor dreams about.
2 – Suffering and success – they go together.
1 – Today’s contest will require strength and courage for us to finish the day with a victory.
2 – Strength and courage are character qualities required for all of life and especially for competition.
3 – Be strong
4 – Be courageous
1 – This could be the last competition for some of our senior players.

Chapel – Attitude
1 – Attitude:
• It can be our greatest asset.
• It can be our greatest liability.
• Your attitude will affect how you perceive your teammates, your coaches, your opponents, the officials and your team’s support staff.
Chapel – Ambitious
1 – Introduction – Think about the goals toward which you are ambitious.
• Team goals – post-season play / playoffs
• A conference championship
• All-conference awards (Academic also)
• All-American awards (Academic also)
• Simply another win, today.
• This is good ambition. It’s not selfish and it benefits everyone associated with the team.
• I see similar altruistic ambition in a man named Caleb in the Bible.
Chapel – Adversity
1 – The events of these last days are those which try men’s souls.
• Disappointment
• Failure
• Loss
• Illness
• Injury
2 – How we deal with adversity is a strong indicator of our character.
• Will we bounce back or will we wilt?
• Will we encourage or will we criticize?
• Will we accept responsibility or will we shift blame?
Chapel – Power, Love and Self-control
1 – To compete strongly today and throughout the season, three qualities will be required – Power, Love and Self-control.
• These are powerfully described in II Timothy 1:7 (read the text aloud).
1 – How does a competitor demonstrate genuine love for his teammates?
2 – This is a great scripture on this theme. I John 3:16-18 (read text aloud)
Success in Football
• Name the two most important things in order to succeed in football as a player or team. (Impossible to answer, use as icebreaker with team….
• What are do you as a team want to succeed in this year? I will use this time for captains to cover major goals –
o (7 shutouts, no region losses, region champions, state playoffs etc.. Should be specific for your team..)
• As team I remind them of the quote “if you don’t know where you are going you will likely end up somewhere else – (John Maxwell)
Vince Lombardi – The only place success comes before hard work is in the dictionary
Chapel – Finish Well
1 – What does it take to finish well?
• To finish well in today’s game…
• To complete this season as champions?
• To finish strongly so as to game a favorable situation in the playoffs?
• To finish well will require a particular attitude.
2 - This attitude is seen in the words of the Apostle Paul in Acts 20:24.
(Read the text aloud emphasizing the first half.)
• Background – Paul is leaving Ephesus (Turkey) and boarding a boat for Jerusalem.
• He knows trouble and pain await him.
• He goes anyway.
Chapel – Discipline
1 – Today’s characteristic of Successful People and Successful Teams is
Discipline.
• To achieve the success we all want, we will have to grow increasingly more disciplined.
• To be well disciplined is to be self-controlled in all areas of one’s life.
Chapel – Complete Players
1 – To be a complete player one must have all parts of his or her person fully engaged in the sport and with your team.
• The body – physical dimension - sport technique
• The mind – mental dimension - sport strategy
• The heart – spiritual dimension – sport passion
2 – Jesus Christ was a complete person (read Luke 2:52).
• Jesus developed in wisdom – mentally.
• Jesus developed in stature – physically.
• Jesus developed in favor with man – socially.
• Jesus developed in favor with God – spiritually.
Chapel – Attitudes
1 – I’ve been very pleased with the attitudes of this team thus far.
• Valuing the team over individualism
• Making sacrifices rather than demands
• Expressed on the field, between teammates, with coaches and even in the media
2 – This reminds me of Philippians 2:3-4 (read the text aloud).
• Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit.
o Don’t draw attention to yourself – deflect praise to others.
o Don’t take offense to trash talk or cheap shots – respect your team and the sport.
o Don’t overestimate your importance – there are other players ready to step into your spot.
1 – Introduction – today we’ll talk about being selfless. That’s the direct opposite of being selfish or having a “Me First” attitude. Selfless people seek the best for others, before themselves.
2 – Read the text – Romans 12:3-5
1 – Today’s characteristic of Successful People and Successful Teams is Solid Leadership.
• Think about the best leaders across your lifetime, in your family, in your home town, from your youth.
• Think about the leaders among your team.
• When are they at their best?
• How do they change situations by simply being present?
• How do their words breathe courage into the souls of their teammates and strike fear in the hearts of their opponents?
• This is the stuff of Solid Leadership.

2 – Here’s another angle on this question from John 12:24-25 (read the text aloud).
1 – Today’s competition will require a tremendous amount of leadership for us to be victorious. It will require a unique type of leadership.
2 – This kind of leadership is best described in Mark 10:42-45 (read the text aloud).
