"For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they will keep you from being useless or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ."
-2 Peter 1:8
You would think that after winning three Super Bowls in four years that Tom Brady and his bunch would be satisfied with their accomplishments. Not quite. In a post-game interview with Andrea Kremer of ESPN, Brady said that he was not content with what they had done. Happy? Yes. But there was room to grow and get better. I am sure there are Patriot players who will relax and relish in their victory, but Tom Brady will get back to work soon. He wants to accomplish more and more.
Similarly, many new believers are excited about knowing God and growing in Christ daily. They pursue Him more and more. However, as time goes by the spiritual fervor to know and grow wanes, and with many believers it never goes beyond the heart of a spiritual infant. God desires just the opposite for us, though. As we live in Christ, He never wants us to be satisfied with our knowledge of Him until He calls us home to Heaven. Our love for Him should cause our growth in Him to grow as we mature.
As Tom Brady isn't content with his level of play, so we shouldn't be content with where we are with Christ. Our desire should be to grow and know Him more intimately every day. With this wisdom and truth in our lives we will be able to defend ourselves against evil. As an athlete and coach, there is always room to grow. When you are through learning and growing, you're pretty much through. This holds true with Christ as well. If you want to grow and go higher in Him, you must know Him and His goodness more and more each day.
1. Are you content with where you are in your athletic career?
2. Where is there room for growth in your life?
3. Today, how can you start growing more in Christ?
