"The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight. I’m no longer worthy to be called your son.'"
-Luke 15:21
De'Andre had it all: a great college basketball career behind him, a Master's Degree from a prestigious institution and an awesome job on Capitol Hill. He had the world by the tail. He thought he had it all on his own. Thinking he didn't need any help, he walked away from his faith and continued to thrive by the world's standards. But when the things of the world didn't fill him up, he decided that he needed more. He left his career to chase a dream. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing, as this is where his true adventure began. When his dream crumbled, he ran and hid. People offered help, love and care, but he was lost in the sin of the world. He had no desire to return home to Christ.
De'Andre's story is similar to the story of the prodigal son in the Bible. The son was tired of his good life. He wanted more, needed more, desired more. He asked his father for his part of the family wealth and left home to chase his dream. When the young man's dreams were chased away and his money was gone, he was left to eat with the pigs. He was definitely down on his luck. Then this young man did a wise thing. He got up and went home. He went home, confessed his sins and begged for forgiveness from his father. He felt unworthy, but his father didn't care about that. He loved his son too much and was just glad that he was home.
I would love to tell you that De'Andre turned back to his heavenly Father for help, but sadly he didn't. He believes he can continue to run and hide from Him and wants nothing to do with the faith that guided him to where he was in the first place. He now has turned to a life of sin. He blames God and others for not being there in his time of need. What is the difference between the prodigal son and De'Andre? About eight inches. The son knew in his head and believed in his heart that he could always come home to his father. The father was looking and waiting for his to come home.
Are you like De'Andre? Are you trying to run and hide from God today? Stop blaming God for your circumstances and run home to Him. He is waiting, watching and looking for you to run into His open arms of love. Only He can make all the pain of life go away. Trust Him again today!
1. Can you relate to De'Andre?
2. Are you playing hide and seek from Christ?
3. Today, what can you do to not run and hide, but run and thrive with Him?
