Goal
Upon the completion of this study, athletes will understand the issues of alcohol and other drugs, and have a basic understanding of the OW2P program. Athletes will have the opportunity to examine their personal decision-making process. They will gain an understanding of the elements in their world that shape the decisions they make. They will be challenged to make a commitment to being drug and alcohol free by signing the OW2P Commitment Card.

OW2P Study - Playing One Way (Part 1)

The Power of Prayer

Nate is as strong as a bull. While playing superback in college in the Big Ten Conference, he battled some of the toughest players in the game of football. Right before Christmas this year, however, he found out that he was battling an even tougher opponent: Stage 3 cancer. On Christmas Eve, he had a tumor removed, but the doctors were still concerned that more cancer might have spread. No amount of physical strength alone would be able to tackle this issue.
The Writing On The Wall & Courage - Daniel Study - Chapter 6

We have all heard the statement “the writing is on the wall.” Coaches have felt the truth of this statement after a big loss, during a losing season or after their job was terminated. If you have gone through the “writing is on the wall” experience, share the heart issues you wrestled with during that difficult time.
Note: King Belshazzar experienced the writing on the wall because of pride and rebellion, but that may not be why you went through your experience. If it is, then confess it to God. If not, then know that God wants to use your trial and pain for His glory.

To Save a Life - I Don't Want To Be Some Christian Study

Summary
Jake goes to youth group but never leaves the back of his truck. Chris comes out to go home and they discuss about why someone should believe in God. Jake remarks there are so many “fakers” in the group, and he did not want to be “just some Christian”.
Verse
“The Lord said: Because these people approach Me with their mouths to honor Me with lip-service—yet their hearts are far from Me, and their worship [consists of] man-made rules learned [by rote]—" - Isaiah 29:13
Discussion Questions
Game-Changer

Everyone has one at least one favorite game-changing sports moment. It’s that one play during a game that changes everything. In a single moment, momentum shifts, and it alters the outcome of the game. Sometimes, the play not only changes the game, but also an athlete’s entire career.
Ice In Their Veins
Traditions run deep in the Swider-Peltz family—especially when it comes to speedskating and spreading the message of Jesus Christ.
I Wanna Be Like Caleb

Remember the sports drink commercials that featured Michael Jordon? And who can forget the movie Space Jam? You would see ads for everything from shoes to t-shirts that screamed “I want to be like Mike!” There was a Michael Jordon craze when he won championships with the Bulls, and that was mainly because he was an incredible athlete. But even with all his moves, passes, dunks and accompanying fame, Michael Jordan has nothing on Caleb the Kenizzite.
Struggling with Disrespect and Shame Study

Key Verse: “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged. And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own?" - Matthew 7:1-3

Why do so many Christians get involved with talking down to other students?
Weigh Nothing Light

Leader: Weigh nothing light on my soul
Are you still in control
Student 1: 3,000 children and teens a day see their parent’s marriage end in divorce
Leader: I desperately need You, I desperately know
Love left me hungry, life gave me pain
This world washed dreams away like the gray rain
Student 3: 66% of the population believes that absolute truth cannot be found
Leader: In you is my promise, I’m so afraid I let it slow
In You is salvation, in You is my glow
So sinking and worthless
So stinking, so fruitless
Smudges like newspaper, sooty and raw
Student 2: The suicide rate among teen has quadrupled in the last 4 decades
Speed Bumps

As athletes, it’s easy for us to find ourselves in situations that we never played out in our minds. Down by 10 in the fourth quarter against a team that didn’t stand a chance against us. Gripping our knee after tearing an ACL right before our senior season started. Left off the roster of the team we thought we deserved to be on. The list goes on and on. But it's how we handle these “speed bumps” of life that set us apart as Christians.
Recently, I was faced with an unexpected speed bump myself as I found myself working on my second round of rehab from knee surgery. (My knee had decided it didn't want to comply to the demands of my coach and the sport I loved.) But having Christ at the center of my life was key in this situation.
Failing to Fail

This was our time. My college basketball team had been in the middle of a rough losing streak, but now we found ourselves in a close game with a rival team on their court. This was our time.
After a series of tough foul calls, we were still within reach--down by three with one minute to go. During the timeout, all my coach asked of me was to get open on the wing and skip it to my teammate coming off of a fade screen. No way could I mess this up for my team.
Affirmative Fold-Ups

Have group comfortably sit in a circle. Give each participant a sheet of paper and ask them to write their name on the top of the paper. Place all of the papers in the center of the circle. Have each participant draw a sheet from the center (not their own) and ask them to write one (or a sentence) positive word about that person at the bottom of the sheet. They then fold the paper up to cover up the word. Have them pl

2-Handed Ro-sham-bo

Standard rock-paper-scissors. Except with 2 hands.
Everyone is in a circle. Your right hand plays against another person's left hand. Your left hand plays against another person's right hand.
If one of your hands loses, it's okay, because that hand is still in the game. You only get eliminated if both your hands lose.
Back To Back

Every group member must find a partner of approximately equal height and weight, if possible. The partners will lock arms with their backs to one another. With arms remaining locked at all times, the partners will sit down on the ground, kick their legs out straight, and try to stand back up. Then groups of four will try the same thing. Then groups of eight, sixteen, and eventually, the entire group together. This is the perfect activity to begin a tr
Who is your Saul?

“No way. Are you kidding me? What??” Those were my responses when someone told me news I never thought I would hear.
It had been right after I’d finished up speaking at a college FCA Huddle several years ago. One athlete, who I thought would never enter an FCA meeting, showed up to the Huddle. This player had been antagonistic to the things of Christ and was as mean-spirited as anyone I’d ever met. If there was a fight in practice, he was in the middle of it. If there was foul language being shouted out on the football field, it usually came from him. In my estimation, this kid was as far from becoming a Christian as LeBron James was from winning Wimbledon. In my mind, it was just not going to happen.
The Fence

People are sitting on a fence and Jesus and Satan are at opposite ends of the fence. Jesus says, “Come and follow me.” to the first person on the fence. That person asks, “Why should I?”. Satan gives reasons to come with him while Jesus combats Satan with the Word of God and reasons to follow Him. Each person decides one way or the other until they come to the last person, who decides that the fence is comfortable. He chooses not to make a decision either way, to just stay on the fence. Satan then says, “Welcome to Hell, I own the fence.” You can follow this by reading Revelation 3:15 or just stop after the last line.

Empowered to Serve, Serving to Empower (Serving - Chapter 2)

Shaun Alexander has always known there was something different about him. Even as a young 10-year-old boy, he sensed that his life would be far from ordinary. He began showing signs of above-average athleticism as a teenager and would go on to be one of the most prolific high-school football players ever produced by the state of Kentucky. And from there, he would achieve All-American status at the University of Alabama before making a massive impact in the NFL as the star running back of the Seattle Seahawks.
But it was more than his uncanny ability to run wild with the pigskin and score touchdown after touchdown that made Alexander special. It was his unusual desire to help others and serve the needs of anyone who crossed his path.
MVP
I wonder if NFL defensive linemen would recognize this Shaun Alexander. The Alexander they’re used to is a game-changing, offensive genius who makes his living carving up defenses for extra yardage. But this guy is so … disarming. He’s laughing with kids, putting his arms around them, and even praying with them. In this environment he certainly doesn’t look like the typical NFL megastar.
Believe it or not, this is Shaun Alexander — a man who loves God, loves people and loves life.
Pride Bombs

I did it again. I can’t believe I haven’t learned yet. I should know better, but it’s so hard not to do it. Everyone does it. I guess it’s considered just part of life, but I refuse to cave in and be like everyone else.
